Intuit stopped selling QuickBooks Self-Employed, and its page for one-person businesses now offers QuickBooks Free, Lite and Simple Start. If you are deciding where to go next, this is how that lineup compares with BrassWell. For the wider list of options, see our QuickBooks Self-Employed alternatives page.

Where QuickBooks Solopreneur is the better choice
TurboTax. If you already file with TurboTax, staying inside Intuit means your categories land where your return expects them, with expert-assisted filing available as an add-on.
Automatic mileage and a free plan. QuickBooks tracks drives by GPS in its mobile app, and its Free plan costs nothing for someone sending two invoices a month.
Room to grow. Simple Start and the rest of QuickBooks Online are there if the business turns into a company with staff and an accountant.
Where BrassWell is the better choice
Your state, as well as the IRS. Intuit’s help center says Solopreneur doesn’t calculate state estimated taxes. BrassWell includes your state rate in the set-aside and the quarterly figure, alongside the 2026 federal brackets and any W-2 wages.
Built for months that don’t look alike. Budgets, goals and the Financial Freedom plan, and a set-aside percentage applied to each payment as it arrives.
No feature meter. BrassWell’s plans don’t count receipts or trips. And there is an iPad app.
A year of each, in dollars
QuickBooks Lite is $20 a month ($240 a year at list price, less in the first three months). BrassWell Core is $199 a year and Pro is $299. If filing through TurboTax is a priority, add the cost of the TurboTax add-on to the QuickBooks side.
Switching from QuickBooks Solopreneur
From QuickBooks Self-Employed or Solopreneur, export your transactions as a CSV and download receipt attachments separately; Intuit notes that receipts may not carry over even within its own migrations. BrassWell imports a CSV of income and expenses, matches the columns to your file’s headers, and skips likely duplicates, so a year of history comes across in one sitting. Keep the old account until your first BrassWell month looks right, and download every receipt image first: receipts are what you need if a deduction is ever questioned, and they are the part most often lost in a move.
Questions, answered
What replaced QuickBooks Self-Employed?
QuickBooks Solopreneur. Intuit no longer sells Self-Employed, and its page for one-person businesses now offers QuickBooks Free, Lite and Simple Start. Existing Self-Employed users can stay or migrate.
Does QuickBooks Solopreneur calculate state estimated taxes?
No. Intuit’s help article says it calculates federal estimated quarterly taxes but not state ones. BrassWell includes a state rate in its estimate.
How much is QuickBooks Solopreneur in 2026?
Intuit’s page, checked October 24, 2026, lists a Free plan at $0 with monthly caps, Lite at $20 a month ($10 for the first three months), and Simple Start at $38 a month.
Is BrassWell a good QuickBooks Self-Employed alternative?
For a self-employed person with uneven income who wants federal and state tax estimates, invoicing and budgets in one app, yes. If you file with TurboTax and want that link above all, Intuit’s own successor is the smoother move.
